Infertility counseling for women in Davis & online in California

The Impact of Infertility

Infertility can be frustrating, heartbreaking, relentless, and painful. It’s an extremely emotional experience, and the process of undergoing treatment with assisted reproductive technologies can only add to the stress, sadness, and anger you may feel. In fact, research shows that women with infertility have the same amount of stress as those diagnosed with cancer and heart disease. Women often also experience grief too, around a process that society tells us should be “natural,” when for many women, it is anything but that. You might feel a sense of shame that your body is not cooperating in the way that you always thought it would. These negative feelings are often compounded by watching your peers get pregnant seemingly with ease and speed. It can all be such an isolating experience.

How I can help…

In therapy, it’s my goal to help you feel less alone. That you have someone to help navigate the myriad decisions you face, as well as manage all the emotions. We will work to find ways for you to feel a sense of control in a situation that often feels like you are not. I will provide you with appropriate resources, such as support groups and books, to complement the work we do in therapy. And I will work with you to move toward acceptance of yourself, your body, and to help you let go of the blame that often comes with infertility.

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”-Maya Angelou

Donor Recipient Psychoeducation Counseling

In addition to providing individual therapy to women, I also offer psychoeducation counseling recommended by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine for individuals and couples who are considering being a recipient of donor embryos or gametes (egg and/or sperm) in third-party reproductive techniques. The intention of this consultation is not an evaluation or determination of your fitness as a parent. Rather, it is an opportunity to have a discussion and gain information about what you should consider when using donor embryos or gametes.  This consultation includes:

  • History of your infertility and treatment to date.

  • Discussion of current thoughts regarding use of a donor.

  • Education about disclosure to your family, friends and support system.

  • Education about disclosure to your child(ren).

  • Education and information about the emotional impact of treatment and ways to reduce that impact.

In addition to our discussion, various resources will be provided including coping and mindfulness tools, ways to increase self-care, and relevant reading lists.

Fees: $275 which includes an approximately 90-minute consultation and the required letter provided to your fertility clinic documenting your consultation.
